To My Progeny

You are in the midst of years filled with more potential than you will ever know, but it feels instead like oppression and control. Yes, you are under the constraint of boundaries, that is sure. But the possibilities that are within grasp of your mind are so full—and so everywhere—that these boundaries exist only to help keep you safe amidst infinite inputs.

To my older progeny: Yes you can. You are feeling the reins. Your fear is a direction signal telling you where you must, at least, explore. To hide from it shuts a door that becomes increasingly more difficult to open. You have within you all the courage you will ever need. It’s already there. Take it right up to the door of your fear and knock. On the other side is the freedom you have been searching for under the guise of everything you have been running from.

To my younger progeny: Yes you can. Your heart is big and soft and so sweet. Remember to begin every interaction with your heart—with that smile that takes up your whole face—because as the world leaves its impressions on you, your skepticism may veil your heart. You can be and do anything you put your heart to, truly. And this potential also exists within everyone you encounter. Explore, take in, and be curious about the world around you.

As I help to guide your paths in this increasingly complex world, remember a few things: All people deserve respect. And at the same time, the opinions others form about you are almost meaningless. Heed them with the same attention you give to the dust collecting in a corner of the room. Sweep it out if it becomes unsightly, and don’t give it another thought. You are an amazing individual. Be interested in the world, in the people you encounter, and in the activities you engage in. Every moment matters. Time feels long now, but soon you will be 90. So soon.

I will always love you no matter what, but if you disrespect me I will break a little. Please be gentle with me. I am always on your side even when we are opposed. It feels like a lie, I know, but I have been put on this Earth to be your mother. My duty is to look out for you. With a few extra years on my side, I can see what sometimes you can’t.

It’s also true that sometimes I can’t see what you see. Talk to me. Tell me how you really feel, even when you don’t want to. Especially when you don’t want to. I am here for you always. I will be like a rock in your life that you can come back to and lean on when you need me. And I will do my best to make that encounter always feel good, like coming home.

You are an amazing human being full of love and potential. Wake up every morning and tell yourself that.
